Discussion

Sjögren’s syndrome is a systemic autoimmune disease that affects the entire body.  The most profound symptoms are extensive dryness of the mucosal membranes (mouth, eyes, vagina, etc.), fatigue, and joint pain.  The moisture-secreting glands are affected in the eyes, mouth, vagina, etc., causing a dry, gritty feeling, especially in the eyes, and in women, often in the vagina.

With a lowered secretion of moisture along the lining of the trachea and throat people often develop a persistent dry cough.  Lowered secretion of moisture along the lining of the lungs, GI tract, urinary tract, vagina, skin, and throughout the body, causes many tissues to become dysfunctional.

The two main symptoms of Sjögren’s syndrome are:

  • Dry eyes. Your eyes may burn, itch or feel gritty — as if there’s sand in them.
  • Dry mouth. Your mouth may feel like it’s full of cotton, making it difficult to swallow or speak.

About half of those with Sjögren’s syndrome have an accompanying autoimmune disorder, particularly Lupus or rheumatoid arthritis.  Sjögren’s syndrome often involves many organs and tissues, such as the joints, kidneys, lungs, liver, pancreas, intestines, thyroid, brain and spinal cord, skin, and blood vessels, with accompanying signs and symptoms. There is also an increased risk of developing lymphoma.

The most common complications of Sjögren’s syndrome involve the eyes and mouth.

  • Vision Problems. Dry eyes can lead to ulcers of the cornea, as well as blurred vision and light sensitivity.  Rubbing dry eyes can cause corneal damage, which may lead to ulcerations.
  • Dental Cavities.  With lowered secretion of saliva to protect the teeth from oral bacteria, there is an increased risk of developing cavities and gingivitis.
  • Yeast Infections.  With lowered secretion of saliva and vaginal fluids, oral thrush (yeast) and vaginitis are common.
  • Painful Sex.  Lowered vaginal secretion does not allow for lubrication, which is very irritating to the vaginal lining.

Less common complications may affect the:

  • Respiratory Infections.  Dryness of the lining of the lungs reduces the immune defenses, allowing viral and bacterial infections, which increases the risk of bronchitis and pneumonia.
  • Liver and Gall Bladder Disorders.  Lowered secretions of liver and gall bladder can lead to hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, and cholestasis.
  • Urinary Tract Disorders.  The kidneys may not be able to filter the blood effeciently, and urinary tract infections are more common due to the lack of moisture not allowing the immune system to function properly.
  • Peripheral Neuropathy.  Numbness, tingling, and/or burning in the hands and feet (peripheral neuropathy).
  • Lymphoma.  There is a slight increased risk of lymphoma, as a small percentage of people with Sjögren’s syndrome will develop this cancer.

Nutritional supplements, especially the powerful antioxidants grape seed extract, turmeric extract (or curcumin), and a blend of other micronutrients are critical for quelling the autoimmune response and reducing the complications of Sjögren’s syndrome.

Fish oil has been shown to help decrease the dryness of the eyes, and help improve mucous membrane secretions.  Co-enzyme Q10, alpha lipoic acid, and magnesium are needed to improve ATP (energy molecule) production within the mitochondria, allowing cells to have the energy to function properly, and providing energy to overcome fatigue.

Nutritional supplements do not cause the immune system to flare up, nor does they worsen the disease. They truly help reduce the symptoms and progression of most, if not all autoimmune disorders, including Sjögren’s syndrome.

Since it takes time to see results, I would suggest that any assessment a trial of the protocols below over the course of a minimum of 6 months.  The more severly one is affected would suggest the use of a higher-dose protocol. Even in a mild case of Sjögren’s syndrome, results are usually more noticeable sooner when the optimal-dose protocol is followed from the beginning.

Please read my Autoimmune Disease article from the Dr. Ladd VIP website for a better understanding of how and why quality micronutrients are beneficial.

The protocols below work for all manner of symptoms caused by autoimmune disorders.  It is important to improve gut health; to improve digestion, toxic clearance by the liver, and the bowel microbiome. What affects the gut affects the body.

The nutritional supplements allow the immune system to be supported to function normally, without over-stimulation.

Protocol for Sjögren’s Syndrome

I have included four levels of protocols based upon a person’s severity of their condition, and ability and/or desire to purchase and stay compliant to the protocols. The Advanced dose protocol will obviously provide the greatest benefit in reducing the severity and progression of many of the symptoms of Sjögren’s syndrome, as well as any other accompanying autoimmune disorder.  In addition, all these supplements will benefit the entire body, and help with energy, and help reduce the risk of nearly all chronic diseases.

Please read medical disclaimer below, and consult your personal physician prior to acting upon any information presented in this article, protocol, or website.
